Why does silver nitrate solution become bluish when copper rod is dipped into it? [ E° Cu2+/Cu = 0.34V and E° Ag+/Ag = 0.80V ]
The standard reduction potential of copper is lower than silver.
E° Cu2+/Cu = 0.34V
E° Ag+/Ag = 0.80V
The copper is oxidized when dipped into AgNO3 solution and becomes bluish.
2 AgNO3 + Cu –> Cu(NO3)2 + 2 Ag
